Western Boots for Men and Women Buying Guide

Western boots are among the most versatile shoes you can find on the market today. You can wear them with a wide range of outfits, and you will always appear stylish. Apart from that, you can wear them as part of your work outfit or when attending casual events. When buying western boots, you should not take this process lightly. After all, if you buy in a rush, you might end up with a pair of shoes that you will never wear due to discomfort or other issues. If you are buying western boots for the first time, here are some of the factors to consider.

Toe Shape

The toe shape plays a significant role when it comes to the comfort of western boots. For instance, if you buy a narrow pair of boots with a pointed toe, it will eventually pinch your toes, leading to lots of pain and discomfort. Western boots come with four toe shapes. They include snip, square, rounded, and traditional. Square-toed boots are among the most popular. Most people prefer them to the other models since they tend to have a spacious toe box. Apart from giving your toes enough room to wiggle, they also help to keep your feet comfortable. Boots with a rounded toe are also popular in this community. When wearing boots with a rounded toe, you will never complain of blisters, cramped toes or painful pressure in your feet. You should always remember that no one can judge you based on the toe shape of your boots as long as you are looking stylish. The most important thing is to stick to what suits your style and ensure you can walk comfortably wearing the boots you have purchased.

Comfort

Comfort should always be the main priority when buying any pair of shoes, and the same case applies to western boots. Most people always assume that their boots will stretch once they break them in. However, that is not always the case. Whenever you buy a new pair of boots, they should feel snug but not too tight or lose. You should be able to walk comfortably in them immediately you purchase them. Also, their comfort levels should increase after you wear them for a few days.

Also, western boots come with different heel heights, and the height you choose depends on how you intend to use them. For instance, if you are buying cowboy boots specifically for riding a horse, then you should choose a model whose heel is at least 2 inches high. This height will give you all the support and grip you need as you ride a horse. On the other hand, if you are looking for western boots for walking, then a height of 1.5 inches should be enough for your needs. Also, regardless of how you intend to use the boots, the heel height should lift approximately half an inch as you walk, since the slippage will decrease as they become worn out. Avoid western boots that don’t come with this slippage feature.

Materials

Most western boots are usually made of cowhide leather. Others are made of exotic materials such as snakeskin, alligator skin, ostrich skin, stingray, and caiman, tend to be quite expensive. However, when you are purchasing cowboy boots made of exotic materials, you need to be careful, since some of the leather used may have been obtained from endangered species. Other boots are made of synthetic materials. Regardless of the materials that have been used, western boots rarely stretch beyond half a size, unlike others such as hiking boots.

Break-in Time

Once you buy a comfortable pair of western boots, breaking them in should not present you with any problems. In fact, it will be an easy and quick process, which you can accomplish in various ways. Walking around with them around your home is one of the methods to consider. As you walk around in them, the boots will eventually conform to the shape of your feet. However, if you want to hasten the process, then you should consider exposing the boot’s leather to warm steam until it becomes pliable and soft to the touch. If the leather is soft enough after this process, then you should put them on and then allow them to cool down. As they cool down, the leather will mold to your feet’s shape. If you opt to break them in using the heating process, then you don’t have to wear them the whole day.

Care and Maintenance of Western Boots

Without proper care, both dirt and dust will penetrate the leather used to make the boots, leading to premature wear and tear. Therefore, regular care and maintenance are necessary to ensure your boots remain in great shape. Once you clean and dry them, it’s advisable to apply a conditioner, as it will help to maintain the flexibility and softness of the leather. Ensure you use lanolin-based, leather-specific conditioners, to ensure your boots retain their original color. Use a damp piece of cloth or a soft brush when cleaning your boots. If your boots are covered with mud, then you should use a toothbrush to scrape it off. On the other hand, if your western boots are looking old and pale, then you can revive them using a leather polish. Ensure you use thin layers when applying the polish remember to buff in between the layers until you achieve the desired shine.
